Who Buys Electric Bikes and Why?

Reasons given for acquiring an electric bike typically include the spectacular riding enjoyment, providing motivation to bicycle more, fitness, just gliiiiiding up hills, assuring an appropriate and healthy level work out including optionally arriving to one's destination without a single bead of perspiration on one's brow, concern for the environment and future generations, saving money, fascination with advanced technology and the satisfaction of making a unique and forward thinking purchase.

GiantAbove all our customers talk about the sense of joy, excitement and fun the actual riding offers them.

Electric bikes are for people who like to pedal. Most of our customers are perfectly capable of pedalling a regular bicycle. Most already own one or more regular bicycles. They typically buy an electric bike because they are intrigued by its unique ability to blend human and motor power and because it offers most of the advantages of the pedal-only bicycle and fewer of its shortcomings.

Most of our electric bike customers are fit, many athletic. Fortunately the electric bike also uniquely provides a safe, managable and enjoyable riding experience for persons who want to get in shape, lose weight, have some injuries and disabilities or have not ridden a bicycle for years.

What about demographics such as gender, age, education and income?

The customer base is quite broad.

About half of our customers are women.

While we sell electric bikes to those in their '20s and to those in their '70s the largest customer group consists of active 'middle-aged' folks.

We have many highly educated customers (although it would seem that no advanced education would be required to discern the obvious benefits of the electric bike).

Household income may not be a major factor considering that our electric bike brands draw on the average (depending of course on the ride and rider) no more electricity than a living room incandescent light bulb, are low on maintenance and advanced, high quality models start at around $1,500.

As we do not advertise much it obviously takes customer motivation and initiative to find us. Not surprisingly, most customers contact us because they suspect that an electric bike may enhance their lives long after the blush of the original purchasing experience has paled.

It is said that the electric bike is the product of the future. You may nevertheless buy one right now. And if 'green' products, particularly those which are energy misers, are not made part of the present what kind of future awaits us?

If our new Mayor of Seattle can ride an electric bike what is your excuse?

November 2009: Mike McGinn, was elected Mayor of Seattle, despite riding an electric bike. And Joe Mallahan, his challenger, was gentleman enough not to bring up this idiosyncrasy in the campaign.
