Our own experience since 1996 clearly tells the story that if bicycles are to be shipped direct to a retail customer this must be done on a case by case basis: The expectations, skills and local resources of the customer vary. The design of bicycle matters. Whether and how the bicycle has been specifically prepped AFTER arrival in the U.S. is crucial, as is how repacked and shipped. How willing is the customer to deal with the risk of shipping damage? How capable is the customer to assemble and adjust the bike to assure safety, maximize longevity and rider enjoyment? How can the warranty be activated? And what's the availability of competent, committed, ongoing support?
The proliferation in shipping of electric bikes is puzzling at best as electric bikes—due to their weight and relative complexity—are obviously less suitable and practical to ship than pedal-only bikes.
Quality pedal-only bikes by leading manufacturers are largely sold through specialty dealers and not shipped direct to retail customers. Self serving? This industry practice is rather as much to protect and support the customer as it is to promote the business of dealers offering test rides and full service departments.
