The eBike: What is it?

If asked what a car is would we suggest that it is a covered motorcycle with twice as many wheels? Would we describe a plane as a three wheeler with wings, whose wheels don't touch the ground (except when parked, taxiing, on take off and landing)? Would we think about a bicycle as a motorcycle without an engine but with pedals?

Hardly. Unambiguously a car is rather a car, a plane a plane, and a bicycle is a bicycle.

After some two decades on the U.S. market hasn't the time come for the electric bike or ebike to similarly and unambiguously be grasped and acknowledged as its own vehicle (rather than e.g. a motorcycle with pedals or a bicycle with a motor)?

Here are some key components of the ebike's identity:

It surges you—as in providing the near instant take off, ever so smooth acceleration and near silent run that the electric motor provides over the internal combustion engine.

While a hybrid it is not of the 'engine + motor' design (as are some model cars, buses, trains and submarines). Instead the ebike uniquely provides a 'man or woman + motor' together drive system.

Why an eBike?

Our customers talk above all about the sense of joy, excitement and fun the actual riding offers, about their fascination with the electric bike's unique ability to blend human and motor power, and that it offers most of the advantages of the regular bicycle and fewer of its shortcomings. Then there are numerous other strong reasons and charming whims for riding an electric or hybrid electric or human power augmented bike.

The ebike's drive system doesn't replace human power. It uniquely augments it. Pedal concurrently and you'll mix human and motor power on a continuum (dial as much or as little help you want in any given instant). Or stop pedaling, twist a throttle and the ebike will propel you as on an agile and quick motorcycle (albeit at low speed). Or turn off the electric power and a well designed, quality brand ebike will pedal about as agreeably a quality bicycle.

Our customers talk—above all—about the sense of joy, excitement and fun the actual riding offers, about their fascination with the ebike's unique ability to blend human and motor power, and about how their ebike offers most of the advantages of the regular bicycle and fewer of its shortcomings.
